A large amount of earth had to be moved to create this space, perched as it is on the steep side of a small valley. As the garden is squeezed between the edge of a wood and a small stream, a great deal of care has been taken with the layout to ensure that it not only provides a pleasant place to walk, but also fulfils its potential through the development of its plantations. A pond and, on the slope, an arrangement of unhewn or hand-hewn stone, form the basic elements of the composition. The addition of a variety of materials and plants then serves to create shifts in mood: from gravel to vegetation, via water and moss, everything possible has been done to achieve balance in this Japanese-inspired garden.
